Lake Forest is pleased to offer two kindergarten instructional classes. Our classes have fifteen students each. As educators we know this is an ideal setting for a kindergarten class.
The instructional day begins with a morning meeting which is full of activities using daily calendar, graphing the weather, checking and comparing the weather in other states, patterns and a very knowledgeable count to the first 100 days of school.
Higher Order Thinking Skills are addressed with similar questioning techniques: How many makes a dozen? How many corners on a square? How does one determine the age of a tree? How’s that for Kindergarten!
Kindergarten instruction emphasizes phonic skills, builds vocabulary, and strengthens reading skills. These skills are needed in order for our students to be successful when they enter the first grade. Students who master these skills are destined to reach benchmark or exceed benchmark requirements on the state mandated DIBELS assessment.
After morning meetings, students are engaged in small group activities known as Center Time where students:
- utilize computers,
- participate in the listening library,
- focus on writing and language arts,
- participate in mathematic lessons, and
- complete art projects
All activities are geared to the theme or skill of the week.
Hands on Science and Social Studies activities are also a part of the curriculum.
The ultimate goal of the Kindergarten instructors is to prepare the students for the next grade and beyond.
