The purpose of the Student Council at Lake Forest Elementary Charter School is to allow students to experience the dynamics of democracy. It also teaches them leadership skills. The council expresses ideas for school activities and ways to continue to maintain a positive school climate. The Student Council is divided into an executive and representative branch. The executive branch consists of the president, vice president, and secretary. The representative branch is composed of two representatives from each class in grades 1st – 8th.
During the fall semester each class campaigns for classroom president and vice president only, winners become members of the Student Council Executive Branch of government. Members in grades 4th – 8th are eligible to seek office of president, vice president, secretary, or sergeant at arms of the Student Council, and winners become members of the Student Council Representative Branch of government.
After the election, students take their oath of office to which they were elected. This ceremony is conducted by a judge from the local area after which the president of the Student Council delivers his/her speech. All of the Student Council Members participate in the induction ceremony.
Student Council officers and representatives must maintain an academic average of 2.0 or better, and exhibit characteristics of a positive “soaring eagle”.
